Today is International Women’s Day! This global holiday has been celebrated for over a century, and is a wonderful reminder of the accomplishments women have achieved and the progress that has been made for women’s rights over time. The History of International Women’s DayThe first National Women’s Day was in 1909, held right here in New York City. It came one year after a women’s rights march in NYC that sought to advocate for better pay and voting rights for women. After that, other countries followed suit, and the first official International Women’s Day was held in 1975 when it was recognized by the United Nations. This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is “Gender equality today for a stabler tomorrow”. Part of the key messaging is around advancing equality, especially in the STEM field, where women are often the minority.
