THERE ARE 4 COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP
YOUR BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
• Implant Type
• Implant Placement
• Incisions – Making scars the least visible as possible
• Implant Size
The most popular type that our doctors use is a silicone type based cohesive gel implant. Many plastic surgeons prefer to use silicone cohesive gel implants since it mimics the look and feel of real and natural looking breast tissue.
The profile of a breast implant refers to the projection and width of its shape. Some implants will lay more flat, while others can protrude more outwards. The current width of your breasts is a large factor that helps the surgeon assist in deciding what profile will suit you best. Common profiles include high profile, moderate profile and moderate plus profile. The profile of an implant is most noticed when one views the breasts from the side (ie- the profile) of the body.
Breast implants come in 2 shapes- round or anatomical. The round shape is the most traditional and the most popular breast implant shape used today. The round shape is circular and uniform in volume. The anatomical or teardrop shaped breast implant is most suitable for patients who wish to have the majority of volume in a specific area of the breast (for example the bottom half).
The size of a breast implant does not come in the traditional “bra” sizes, but are measured in cc’s or grams that range from 200-800. Choosing the size is based on your anatomy, lifestyle and preferences. Some women may want to add just a little bit of volume, while other women may want/need more fullness in the breasts. It is important to remember that no two women are alike and the same size will look different on each woman.
Breast implants are not just ‘shoved’ into the breasts, a pocket needs to be created first to allow for the careful insertion of the implants. Implants can either be situated behind the pectoralis muscle or in front of this muscle. When the implant is placed in front of the muscle it is referred to “Subglandular Placement”.
Your surgeon can go through which implant placement would be best suited for you.

INCISIONS: MAKING SCARS THE LEAST
VISIBLE AS POSSIBLE
A trade-off for larger breasts may be a scar for some women. Our plastic surgeons try their best to make the smallest, least visible incisions possible. This includes placing the incision in the least conspicuous places.
The periareolar incision is made at the edge of the areola and is a possibility for placing the implant. Here, the incision will be made where there is darker skin around the nipple and be less visible.
This is known to heal beautifully with the least visibility. The most common of incisions for breast augmentation is the inframammary or “breast fold” incision. The scar can only be seen when the breast is lifted. Also there is the transaxillary incision, which requires the incision be made through the armpit. In this case you can be sure there will be no visible incisions in the breast area.
And finally the transumbilical incision (TUBA) is the newest incision for saline implants. Here, the incision is made in the navel and the implants will be inflated (filled) after placement.
Visible scarring is one of the risks that can occur with breast augmentation, along with other potential complications. If you do form a bothersome scar, our doctors have several non-surgical options to reduce them; just ask!
